A special Saturday afternoon screening to benefit Showpaper, consisting of shorts presented by the Get Ahead Fest. The program will run around two hours with an intermission midway. The first block of shorts will consist of works created for the first three editions of the Get Ahead Fest this summer on the themes of Will Power, Cities, and End Times. The second block will be a variety of bizarre and fun shorts curated by the Get Ahead team. As a special treat, the Get Ahead team will show a sneak preview of their new super 8mm music video from the Jackson Heights sensation The Beets,”I Think I Might’ve Built a Horse,” which will be featured on their upcoming album.
Showpaper is a non-for-profit organization committed to establishing a greater network of emerging young artists and musicians throughout the tri-state area. The bi-monthly, print-only publication provides a comprehensive listing of over 300 all ages music events in conjunction with database of more than 50 show spaces for young performing artists. Additionally, each issue’s cover is a full color print by a current and upcoming artist. While Showpaper is first and foremost dedicated to giving young adults access to music, we are focused on the parallel aims of freely exposing the community to culturally relevant contemporary art and multi-faceted performance. Showpaper is distributed throughout all 5 boroughs of New York City, upstate New York, Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
The Get Ahead Festival is an ongoing film series that encourages established and first time filmmakers to create new work without direct economic incentive. The Festival takes place on the last Sunday of the month, each time with a different venue and theme. The “EndTimes” event (9/27) at St. Cecilia’s Convent in Greenpoint marked the end of the first cycle, which included the themes “Will Power” and“Cities”. Currently, Get Ahead is planning the second progression of events, to start January 31st, as well as a DVD/Magazine release.
