Avi Spivak
Emerging from a depraved lineage that counts the acid addled mind of R. Crumb, the scratchy mitts of G. Panter and the rabbit riven vision of M. Groening as princes among men, Avi Spivak needs little introduction amongst the homunculi that inhabit the comic book stores of America. His forming genius has captured the zietgiest of the 21st century Toon Town in his renowned rock zine Human Being Lawnmower. His growing international presence is witnessed in his cartoons for NYC’s Screw Mag, strips for such magazines as Sweden’s Denimzine and a slew of exhibits that span the globe from Paris to Los Angeles.
Based in the grittiest part of NY’s heaving rock n’ roll underbelly, Spivak is the voice of the two fisted, drunken louts that inhabit the suicidal periphery of of a town still haunted by the music of punk rock giants. Like the artists and poets of yore Spivak treads the same dark Brooklyn streets but with a new vision that celebrates the scumdog princes and princesses scorned by the mainstream media morons.
Ordinary human beings can still count Avi Spivak as a friend but only time contains the black ink scrawls spawned by a pen bent on revenge and the redemption of the comic book zine.
