Brits Who Cracked America: Daniel and John Battsek
Daniel Battsek ran Miramax Films after Harvey and Bob Weinstein split from Disney, where he was instrumental in acquiring, green-lighting or distributing such renowned and award winning films as Tsotsi (Best Foreign Language Oscar),The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The Queen, Happy-Go-Lucky, No Country for Old Men (Best Feature Film Oscar) and There Will Be Blood.  Now Battsek is President of Cohen Media Group, and his most recent foreign release Timbuktu became an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.  Prior to coming to the US, Battsek ran Disney’s UK production and distribution arm which produced films such as Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots, among others. Daniel is a BAFTA New York Trustee.

John Battsek runs Passion Pictures in London, and despite the fact that he resides in the UK, he’s had a string of major successes among feature documentaries in the US, beginning with his first film, the Academy Award winning One Day in September, but also including Searching for Sugarman, Sergio, The Tillman Story and The Imposter.  Their paths have crossed several times, but notably when Daniel was President of National Geographic Films and released Restrepo, which John produced and which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2010.
Moderator Dee Poku is the Founder and CEO of WIE, a women’s leadership network. WIE curates dynamic conversations with powerful trailblazers via its global conferences and salons, all designed to empower emerging women leaders. She is also the founder of Right Angle, an entertainment marketing consultancy that develops and implements innovative strategic partnership campaigns for a cross section of films, non-profits and consumer brands. Dee’s background includes senior marketing roles at Paramount Pictures and Focus Features.  Dee is a BAFTA New York Board Member.
