Paris is Burning with House of LaDosha

With Carolyn Lazard and House of LaDosha

Radical Love

6 minutes | USA | 2013 | Digital Projection

Hillevi Loven‘s short film, preceding the feature, examines the world of Cole, a queer Christian teen growing up in the rural South. Identifying as a transgender male, Cole is in a relationship with Ashley, another Christian teen. Together they struggle to be accepted for who they are in a conservative Bible belt community.

Loven is a filmmaker, producer and still photographer based in Brooklyn. In collaboration with MIT anthropologist Natasha Schull, she co-directed the documentary, Buffet: All You Can Eat Las Vegas, which won Best Short from the Society of Visual Anthropology. With the Florida ACLU and the NAACP, she spearheaded a voter advocacy project that included the production of the documentary video, Take Back the Vote. Her corporate clients include Condé Nast, American Express and Time Inc. She has produced collaborative work with the Brooklyn art collectives Uniondocs and OVO, and is a member of the Brooklyn Filmmakers’ Collective. Radical Love is the culmination of years of Hillevi’s own social justice work.

Paris is Burning

71 minutes | USA | 1990 | Digital Projection

Jennie Livingston‘s award-winning, critically-acclaimed documentary pays tribute to the vibrant subculture of New York’s drag balls of the late 80’s, an underground scene that famously became the inspiration for Madonna’s ‘Vogue’. This is where it all began; in the community halls of Harlem where flamboyant characters belonging to rival ‘houses’ gathered to compete on makeshift catwalks.

Paris is Burning is an intimate portrait of a time, a place and a community of outsiders finding expression, strength and pride in a world of their own creating. A special discussion will follow the screening organized by Carolyn Lazard.

Chances are if you are queer and you party in New York City you know Juliana Huxtable Ladosha. She is the notorious hostess of Frankie Sharp’s WestGay and LadyFag’s Friday party ELEVENELEVEN. A former ACLU paralegal, Juliana’s ascension to stardom is characteristic of our times; her tumblr page began as a pastiche of her modeling gigs, interests, and astute prose on gender performance in our culture and quickly grew into her calling card.  Thousands of people visited her tumblr page daily (and continue to do so) making her an almost overnight internet celebrity.

Carolyn Lazard is a writer and filmmaker currently residing in Brooklyn.
